Jackson State University quarterback Shedeur Sanders’ career day passing led the Tigers to a 49-7 Southwestern Athletic Conference win over Mississippi Valley State Saturday at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Sanders completed 40 of 51 passes for 438 yards (all career highs) with four touchdowns and one interception. He completed passes to 12 different receivers as Jackson State (4-0 overall, 2-0 SWAC) heads into a bye week before returning to action October 8 at Alabama State.

WR Dallas Daniels had his best day as a Tiger, catching 10 passes for 142 yards. Shane Hooks (7-57-1), Willie Gaines (2-42-1), Camron Buckley (4-24-1), and J.D. Martin (2-8-1) each caught scoring passes from Sanders.

Sanders was intercepted on his final pass attempt of the game, ending a career-long streak of 179 passes thrown without an interception dating back to the 2021 Cricket Celebration Bowl. On the season, Sanders has passed for 1,394 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Santee Marshall led the JSU ground attack with 118 yards on only six carries, including a career-long 91-yard run. Sy’veon Wilkerson rushed nine times for 55 yards and a touchdown, and Martin had a touchdown scamper on the ground as well. The offense gained 638 total yards, including 200 on the ground.

After allowing a first-drive touchdown, Jackson State’s top-ranked FCS defense in the nation kept Mississippi Valley State (0-4, 0-1) off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest. The Tigers allowed only 142 yards after the opening scoring drive by MVSU. JSU limited Valley to only 36 yards passing, while Jackson State limited the Delta Devils to only two of 14 third-down conversions.

The defense got in on the scoring as well, as John Huggins returned an interception 20 yards for a third-quarter touchdown.
